PLAQUE without commemoration
It is hardly conceivable to allude a plaque with no commemoration, an idea that might come to our minds while watching Felix Becker´s painting, plaques without symbol looking strong colours, a very personal interpretation. Abstraction is a very part of Becker´s works. They show that decent sometimes geometrical divisions in monochrome colours.
One would see a sparkling green at a finished work of the artist. But he uses strong colours in the first stages of the works, he uses colours like red on the first layers, following grey surface. “That´s the way most works look like when they are on their first stages,” Becker confirms. It seems to be a perfect start point for the Artist since he repeats and removes layers to achieve those interesting coloured nuances. “it is a color that we find very easy in the nature, grey is color that filters many tones that might not mean that much to us biologically speaking, the Berlin based painter reveals. Actually, other colours are more predominant on the finished paintings, grey, light green, blue, black are iconic for Becker´s proposals. They responds to Becker´s visualisation of space harmony even though he admits that he did not know how a painting would look like at the end when he stretches a canvas. The painter is definitively very careful with very strong colours at finishing his works, thus allowing surrounding elements to coexist. «It would be more convenient to execute those strong colours in small doses on specific spots of the works to harmonise in the room with other elements surrounding» This reflection makes sense for the observer and on Becker´s works, where the respect for the structure of the works is palpable with the color selection.
It is an abstraction reiterating freedom of interpretation. Becker is aware of it and goes through this approach by selecting open titles. “They are not absolute names, they should be just a help for the spectator to run their imagination. That is why they are always between brackets. But I need them to work, even though they are not that meaningful to read the work,” he explains. Sharing a visual proposal with the observer of his works seems to be far more important to the artist. “I refuse to talk that much about the titles because of that,” Becker replies when asked about his work´s titles.
“When they feel urged to observe my work through a first glance. That is my goal. The association to content of the work does not play a decisive role to me. Even if I painted a banana or a fish, everyone has his own experience or thought about it,” he reveals.
It might be the reason why he is not that explicit when one watches Becker´s works. In fact, the artist refuses to play on symbology or connotations to prevent the observers from having many expectations when it comes to content and their personal interpretations. “I do work, of course, for myself but I also show the result because I would love to talk about it. Therefore I regard each each talk that I have on my works as really inspiring, and it makes me learn even more,” he admits.
The clear awareness of the artist on the whole process of painting might be related to a life-long experience at creating. From the very early age, he was into painting. The influence of his environment gave him the opportunity to develop these special skills.
“ In my first 10 years of age, I grew up a WG where there was an artist´s studio that inspired me and supported me in my innocent intents to paint. I had so much material and stuff to draw and paint. I drew and painted a bunch of things, thousands of things. It was my main focus, more than going out to play with kids“, Becker tells. „ You will be a painter,“ his close relatives always said.
The very act of painting makes a painter. He was already a painter back then, even though he stopped to paint as he got older. Felix Becker recognises luck in the fact that he always stayed tuned with art to eventually become a professional painter. He was a frequent gallery and museum goer and never lost the interest in knowing more about artistic movement and scene. Despite the way for painting was paved, Becker hesitated after high school and decided to become a teacher. But he realised that art was the path to freedom, “the act of painting is freedom and self determination,“ the Frankfurt born painter reveals.
Becker´s works embody cool and calming colours that shows creativity and intelligence in less orthodox visual proposals by renouncing to figurative elements that might be inevitably associated to the common sense of our immediate experiences and known world. Abstraction remains therefore Felix Becker very personal invocation to run our imagination.
Felix Becker´s artistic proposal are shown now in the exhibition Painting after Painting at Heike Strelow Galerie in Frankfurt Main Germany until mid October.
